In December 2018, Hydro Engineering Institute Sarajevo began the implementation of the project “Development of a Procedure Plan in case of dam breach, Vidara – Gradačac”.
Vidara Dam is located in the north-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina, close to Gradacac town. It was built on Vida River in 1971. for flood protection of Gradacac and its industrial zone. In addition, Vidara reservoir was used for the water supply of the town of Gradacac.
Vidara dam is earth dam, made of clay material, with the upper part of the upstream supporting body made of gravel.
The designed dam crest is at an elevation of 137.00 mamsl, and the designed normal water surface is 134.35 mamsl. The maximum water surface (the lowest point on the dam crest) is 136.42 mamsl. The dam crest is approximately 8.00 m wide and 240 m long.
The project lasted 4 months and included the following:
- Hydraulic calculations and analyses;
- Hydraulic modelling in which two possible dam breach scenarios were analysed :
- Scenario – Dam breach in case of overflow over the dam crown,
- Scenario – Dam breach in case of water leakage due to piping – “Sunny day”,
- Calculation of flood line, size, velocity and time of flood wave propagation downstream of the dam in case of emergency discharge of the dam
- Creating floodplain maps
- Analysis of the impact of the occurrence of waves on the area and facilities downstream of the dam
- Geodetic survey of transverse profiles downstream of the dam
- Action plan for notification and alerting in case of dam breach
The project is successfully completed in April 2019.
